Curtain Call

In the Queen City where so much can be accomplished by all if there was a little unity, it amazes me that there is none. I hear about a lot of different beefs between the artists here in Charlotte, but it’s like, wtf?? Why is everyone here against each other? Why can’t one artist say something good about another artist? Why can’t people come out to support each other at the open mics instead of doing their performance and leaving? Why don’t people understand that if we are to going to put the QC on the map, its going to take us all coming together? One person can’t build a city. A few have tried, but none have succeeded. At this point in the game no one from Charlotte has “made it” yet, so why the untouchable attitudes? It’s scary to think about what would happen if some of these people did “make it”. How wrong they would have it. Once you do make it, it becomes your responsibility to help others, not a reason to have a jacked up attitude. At that point you become a kind of superhero. You should use your celebrity to do as much good as you can. Instead of leaving after you perform, stay and party with the next artist that’s performing. Instead of trying to get a collab with someone from out of town, do a collaboration with someone from right where you at. Do you think Atlanta would let us come into their camp and get money without them gettn it too? What about NY? Don’t even THINK about it in Chicago. The point I am making is that until we start showing each other love and respect right here in our own back yards we aren’t going to make it.

Self preservation is the first law of nature. It’s a group effort people. Charlotte needs to take care of Charlotte. We don’t have to go nowhere to get on. We can get on right here with each other. Nobody else gotta vouch for us. We vouch for ourselves. Why do you think so many people come through Charlotte? It’s because we matter. We are the next big city. The only thing we have to do now is get there. And even the superheroes came together sometime.

OPINION

After working for “the man” for a number of years and saving up, you have decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship. Congratulations. But before you tell your employer to kiss your grits you need to be aware of an important fact. If you are going to start a business you need to be able to do all parts of your business at least moderately well. That’s not to say that you won’t need help because you will. The thing is you need to know how you want all aspects of your business to be run. Otherwise, you are going to have a lot of heartaches when it comes to dealing with your business. We all know that in small start ups oftentimes the owner wears many hats. There are a few reasons for this. Money is the number one reason. Anyone who has started a small business understands that finances are often tight. You can’t depend on someone else to do any part of it for you because this may require you to waste precious funds paying the other person for their services. And the truth of the matter is, unless they see your vision it’s not only money that you could be wasting, but time and energy as well which are also important resources. Another thing to consider is that you learn by doing. At the end of the day, it is your business, no one else’s. And though they may be “an expert” in whatever it is they do, you are the expert in you.
